The Law School of UCLan Cyprus is happy to announce its new project on social mediation, which will be implemented in cooperation with the Institute of Citizenship, Society and Change in the United Kingdom.
Social mediation is a tool which creates and repairs the social infrastructure of communities for purposes of preventing, tackling and/or rehabilitating conflicts that arise due to intolerances and prejudices such as racism and xenophobia. Social mediation establishes a setting where parties come together to define, conceptualise and tackle the underlying causes of conflict for purposes of ensuring peaceful coexistence. The process is facilitated by a social mediator. This methodology has been used in a wide diversity of countries and contexts ranging from Northern Ireland to France.
The project will work with communities and professionals in Cyprus to promote social mediation as a tool to tackle communal conflicts. On July 14 and 15, there will be a workshop for professionals and stakeholders on social mediation as a tool for preventing and tackling community conflicts. This will be held at UCLan Cyprus. The workshop will also include a training on ICLAIM’s handbook on social mediation for professionals. ICLAIM (The Interdisciplinary Centre for Law, Alternative and Innovative Methods), a Cypriot non-profit organisation established in 2017 is the expert partner in this project, while the participants of the workshop will be trained on the soon to be released handbook for professionals developed by ICLAIM on social mediation.
There will also be a pilot test of social mediation in both Cyprus and the UK as well as the creation of an online open access platform with resources and material on anyone who wants to learn about social mediation.
